3 Reasons to Care about your Pet's Dental Health

SMILE. It’s time to show off your pet’s pearly canines, and by canines we mean teeth. It is Pet Dental Health Month – a whole month sponsored by the American Veterinary Medical Association to address the significance of oral health care for pets.

While some pet parents may brush their pet’s teeth every day for some that may not be feasible. However, there are so many great products available now like dental chews, oral rinses and drinking water additives that everyone can provide dental health care to their pets.

Pet Dental Health is important to your pet’s overall health and well-being. Just like in humans, the build-up of plaque and tartar on teeth can lead to gum disease as well as other illness if left untreated so here are 3 Reasons to Care about your Pet’s Dental Health.

1. Gum Disease can lead to tissue destruction and tooth loss. As the bacteria in tartar increase, it causes inflammation in the tissues of the mouth. The chronic inflammation along with the bacteria cause damage to the tissues and bone that keep teeth in place.

2. Untreated Gum Disease can cause your pet chronic pain. Pets with chronic tooth pain may have trouble picking up food, only chew on one side of the mouth or will not let you touch their head.

3. If tartar gets under a pets gum line, it can lead to chronic infections of the heart, liver and/or kidneys.

  17. Because we adopted Ruby when she was a bit older, she came to us with some dental issues. She's already had one dental and we are hoping she won't need another one. We definitely brush her teeth.

  18. Lots of toys to chew on, and a dental spray for Cricket as well. Luke won't let me do the spray, so I am trying to remember to give him a carrot to chew on daily, since I heard those were good for the teeth!
