3 Reasons to Feed Your Dog Red Beets

In preparing Oz’s BARF raw diet, I generally mix up my own vegetable mix.  The mix I make has greens, sweet potatoes or carrots and, after some great blog reading, red beets.  But why red beets?

Oz the Terrier enjoys healthy red beets in his veggie mix for his BARF raw diet

Well, as my reading and further research turned up, red beets contain a variety of health-boosting nutrients which are great for senior dogs (and younger dogs as well).  If you know anything about red beets, then you may be concerned because these little powerhouse veggies contain the highest sugar content of all the vegetables.  But like many foods, if eaten in moderation they can add great benefits to your dog’s health.

3 Reasons to Feed your Dog Red Beets

3 Reasons to Feed Your Dog Red Beets

1. Red Beets help fight inflammation.  Red Beets contain a substance that is known to suppress certain inflammatory signals that are involved in arthritis and atherosclerosis (hardening and narrowing of the arteries) during the aging process.  This substance can help alleviate arthritis symptoms, protect the arteries of your senior dog as well as alleviate allergy symptoms,

2. Red Beets have anti-Cancer properties.  Red Beets contain unique phytonutrients and antioxidants that can help fight free radicals and can help prevent certain types of cancer.

3. Red Beets help detoxify the body.  The pigments in red beets hook up with unwanted toxins to neutralize and rid them from the body.  In doing so, these pigments protect healthy cells from the toxins, including cells in the brain and liver.

Red Beets can easily be added into your dog’s diet.  If you cannot find fresh beets to prepare at your local grocery or farmer’s market, and sometimes I cannot find them fresh, you can also use canned beets.  Canned red beets contain enough of all the above nutrients to bring added health benefits to your dog, just be sure to rinse them as the packing liquid may contain some unwanted salt.

Has your dog ever had red beets?
Will you add red beets to your dog’s diet?

  1. They have had food that has red beets mixed in it, but I don't really like to use it too much...Staining is a real problem with white dogs and beets can contribute to the staining!

  2. my mom said she will buy it for me.... but my dad has to prepare it for me... red beets is the horror for my mom lol

  3. Oh I didn't nose that about beetroot...the peeps will haf to start sharing it wiv me!

  4. Must admit the boys will not eat anything beginning with "V" which of coarse is any kind of Vegetable. They both use to love raw veggies but then over time started picking them out and throwing them on the floor. Funnily enough they will eat the veggies in the Bravo mix. Now fruit is another thing - banana, apples, pears - those they will gobble down

  5. They love lettuce, carrots and green beans. Maybe I'll try beets to see if they like them.

  6. Oh Oz... this is most informative. My peeps love beets in fact they are having some tonight.
Once or twice a week they eat only veggies for supper.

  7. Gering-ding-ding-ding-dingeringeding! Ozzie you there buddy? Lee loves pickled beets and eats them often. You know I beg for them and she gives me a slice. Now I know why Lee likes them, because they are good for you and me. Why I need to detoxify my body. Thanks for telling me something we love is good for us.
    Thanks for being a friend

  10. Nope, never had them. Mom doesn't eat them, so we don't have them around. Maybe in a can I would try them, but I don't usually like veggies too much. We will see.

  11. I have never eaten them, but the dogs love them in their Dr. Harvey's food. ♥ I wonder if they would dehydrate like a sweet potato. Hmmmm...

  12. I've never tried beets but the next time my granddad has some I'll see if he will let me try a bite of his.

    Aroo to you,

  13. Well, the Momster loves beets AND beet greens, so we don't see why it would be difficult for her to share with us. Thanks for sharing all the great advantages of red beets:)

  15. I eat red beets all the time. Cupcake usually gets a taste. I've never mixed them into her food, but I intend to start!!

  16. It's no wonder my gang loves the beet treats I get them.

  17. i bet they are very good!

  18. I'm the only family member who likes beets, so when I get a can you know who eats them all. I'd like to caution your readers to pay attention to the word "moderation" here - and know that it's possible for beets to turn urine and/or feces a harmless maroon color that can be mistaken for blood. If that happens, don't go to the vet, just cut down the amount of beets :D P.S. Next time I'll share a few of my beets with Toby! Thanks, Oz!

  19. We are adding these to our list of vegetables to try, thank you for the info!

  20. I get it in my veggie mix sometimes, I love vegetables.. well, not as much as meat, but they're ok! Mum's addicted to the Sweetfire Beetroot, its pickled in hot stuff, and eats loads of it but it's kind of firey so she'll probably not share because I won't like it. Excuses excuses.

Thank you for stopping by and leaving a pawprint. I enjoy reading each and every one!
