The Tragedy and Comedy of Life

"Life is a tragedy when seen in close-up, but a comedy in long-shot."
-- Charlie Chaplin

Tragedy, the Close-up:
Last Thursday afternoon, Ma and Daddy-dog's trip to Nepal with Habitat for Humanity was officially cancelled.  That also means the plans Ma had made for them and all their friends to celebrate their 10th Wedding Anniversary in Kathmandu, Nepal were officially cancelled as well.  The last few days, everyone had been feeling lost and sad and a bit disappointed...but they are slowly getting over it.

Comedy, the Long-shot:
It should come as no surprise to Ma and Daddy-dog that their 10th Wedding Anniversary plans are now cancelled.  Back in 2005, on October 24, four days before their wedding, Hurricane Wilma, a category 3 storm, hit South Florida.  The resulting damage to buildings and roads made it so their actual wedding was cancelled.

Ma bought a cardboard cut-out of Wilma Flintstone to have at their ceremony/reception in February 2016 as a reminder of the hurricane.  Now, they both joke about how the cancellation due to a hurricane may be a "sign".

Comedy and Tragedy -  Visions of Experience:
The running joke now among the group of friends that were going to Nepal with Ma and Daddy-dog is, whenever something happens to say "Well, at least that happened before we leave for Nepal!"

Last Friday at dinner, Ma and Daddy-dog decided to no longer celebrate the 10s when it comes to anniversaries.  They say it is obvious that the universe will conspire against them every 10 years to ruin their "plans".  They will now be celebrating the 11s - like "the 10th anniversary of their 1st anniversary" since that day went off without a hitch!

Ma realized that the little prizes she bought to give to all their friends on their 10th anniversary in Kathmandu now match the favors she had for her wedding in one significant way.  Both have the correct date (because they did get married, very quickly, on their wedding day) but both have the wrong place!  Ma thinks she should have something printed every 10 years so she can save one of everything to see all the wrong places they would have been for their wedding anniversary.  BOL!

  1. I like that idea to clebrate the 11s... that makes their anniversary egg-stra special. Is their plan generally cancelled furever or is it possible to to go later to Nepal?

    1. Well, Easy, "later" is a vague time frame right now. Because of Nepal's new constitution and the subsequent issues with India and the Indian peoples that live in Nepal at the borders, no supplies are getting through at all for the last several weeks. The people of Nepal are not receiving shipments of any fuel for their cars and generators nor cooking oil and food, as all shipments are stuck at the Indian borders. Until everything gets resolved, going would just cause undue burden on their dwindling supplies. We feel so sad for the people of Nepal...Ma has been in touch with several Nepalese that she was communicating with for their trip and they are struggling. They told Ma that it is wise that they do not come. So sad all around.

  3. Well dang we are sorry the plans were canceled....my granny had a saying that mom tries to realize in times like this,
'delays are for a reason'! So Oz darlin' you just give them extra kisses on their 10th and y'all have a fun family time.
My sis and bil were married on 8/15/98...on the way home from their honeymone in Jamacia Hurricane Bonnie turned around in the middle of the Atlantic...following them home making a 2nd visit the Coast of NC. Where they were moving the following weekend. Their new apt. was flooded they had to found somewhere else to live in a week's time...so they could start their jobs.

    1. Oh dear, Madi...being chased by a hurricane is awful! Leave it to Mother Nature to wreak havoc every once in a while.

    1. Thanks Princess Leah...though it took a few days to get here. It's not just the anniversary plans that made them sad, but the building with Habitat for Humanity for 100 needy families as well. You know ma and Daddy-dog love to help people in that way.

  8. I hate that their plans got canceled but on the bright side at least they can still celebrate on a smaller scale. And remember, every day together is a celebration.

  10. A case of sour grapes is called for here. The cancellation saved you from being bitten by a Nepalese nit and dying from the Kathmandu flu.

  13. I am really sorry about your trip. I know how bummed you must be. I am a firm believer that everything happens for a reason and although it might not seem like it at the time, it is usually for the best. I have had many, many times in my life where I have to think that way to avoid being upset about things that I have no control over. Have a wonderful anniversary. ♥

  21. You have to be pretty confident about each other to still get married when a hurricane is coming. Mom would have taken it as a sign to RUN! But her and dog-daddy just celebrated 23 years on Oct. 12 and now with her bad back and knees she's not going anywhere. Congratulations! Love Dolly
