April is National Poetry Month

Can you believe I almost forgot that April is National Poetry Month?  Inaugurated in 1996 by the Academy of American Poets, National Poetry Month is a celebration of poetry's vital place in our culture.

You can celebrate National Poetry Month by reading some of your favorite poetry or writing a poem of your own.  I wanted to write a poem so I went outside with my computer and waited for inspiration to hit.

After the inspiration came, this is the poem I came up with:

Mockingbird
In the Spring, there comes along
a little bird of many song
He can call and trill and even cry
to friends below or in the sky
Each note he sings with vibrant flair
is carried swiftly by the air
like an arrow straight to your heart
his music is his instinctive art
Day and night he will intone
I wonder which song he calls his own?

Here is a short recording of the male Mockingbird who keeps visiting our back yard each day, singing his heart out.  He is on top of the Bougainvillea on the other side of the fence.

What kind of birds visit your yard each day?
Happy National Poetry Month!

  18. I loved the poem! And thanks for that video, too. We don't have mockingbirds here, but we're absolutely swarmed with hummingbirds right now. They don't sing as much as buzz, but we love them just the same.

  21. What a lovely poem! We get mockingbirds here too - I think they're so interesting with all their different calls. My sis has one by her house and she swears some of his "mocking" calls are cellphone rings, car alarms and sprinklers!

As for other birds, we get some sort of little sparrow (not sure exactly what it is), hummingbirds, hawks, crows (Rita HATES them!), the occasional seagull, and every once in a great while in the spring we'll get a lovely oriole.
