Don't be a Venue for a Flea Circus #Seresto

Thankfully, I have never been a "venue" for a Flea Circus.  I have never been infested with fleas unlike my friend Pepper Pom who once had to battle her own Great Flea Invasion.

I feel I have been very lucky to not have ever been infested with fleas.  As you know, I am allergic to the saliva of the flea when it bites and get terrible Flea Allergic DermatitisIt only takes a single flea bite to trigger this allergic reaction.  Even with just one flea bite, I itch for days.  Imagine if I was ever infested with fleas how bad my allergic reaction would be?

Fleas are terrible pests and can cause pets infested with them to develop anemia and/or tapeworms.  Though there are over 2,000 species and subspecies of fleas, the most common flea to infest pets in the U.S. is the Cat Flea (Ctenocephalides felis).

Can you tell that I know a lot about fleas?  Since determining my flea bite allergy, I have learned more than I care to know about these pesky critters.  Did you know...

1. Fleas have been on this planet for approximately 100 million years.

2. Once adult fleas emerge, they have approximately 7 days to find a blood meal or they will die.

3. A female flea lays eggs within 35 to 48 hours of its first blood meal.

4. The female flea can lay 2,000 eggs in her lifetime.

5. The female flea consumes 15 times her own body weight in blood daily.

6. A flea can jump up to 8 inches high, or approximately 150 times its own height. That's like a human leaping over tall buildings in a single bound.  Fleas...the Supermans of the pest world.

For several months now, I have been wearing the new Seresto collar by Bayer.  It has kept me flea and tick free which means no more itchy allergic rash.

The Seresto collar is very convenient because you do not need to remember to apply it monthly like some other flea and tick preventatives.  Seresto is non-greasy, odorless and water-resistant and can provide protection from fleas and ticks for up to 8 months (depending on your bathing/swimming schedule).

If you don't want to be a venue for an upcoming Flea Circus, you should try the new Seresto collar.  If you do, you can sign up for a $20 rebate on your purchase at PetParents.com.

  5. I totally hate that fleas. the worst is that it seems they even appear when you use frontline. I've got one (oh no wait you said a flea has 2000 eggs?), ok, so I got probably "some" fleas at the last dog show, they bit me between my back legs and the area became infected and it was icky and red. I will check that collar before I turn into the director of a flea circus :o)

  7. We use nothing. One of the advantages of the desert southwest is that there are no fleas or ticks. There are no squirrels, either.

  8. Oz my mom must be allergic to flea slobber too...when they had their mini Doxie Toto way back a long time ago when all they had for protection was flea collars...any flea that got in the house loved Mom better than Toto.

  10. Ugh, fleas. I itch just thinking about them. They were a huge problem when we lived in California. We moved into an apartment that had fleas. My pups' flea and tick protection just wasn't enough. I never want us to have to go through that again! I can't imagine what it would have been like if they were allergic to the flea bites :(

  13. Thankfully we haven't had fleas here either. We wish it was something we could put on in another form, not a collar. Mom doesn't like a second collar on us and when we do our scent work, we don't want anything around our necks. We just wish fleas and ticks would all go away forever!
