Top Tactic to Get Nonscoopers to #ScoopThatPoop

Welcome to #ScoopThatPoop - a monthly Blog Hop to bring awareness to the importance of scooping your dog's poop.  I'm happy to host with my good friends Sugar the Golden Retriever and My Pawsitively Pets

Have you tried any of these tactics to get others to scoop their dog's poop?
  • Asking the offender if they need a poop bag
  • Telling the offender how poop is bad for the environment
  • Making a poop bag station for a favorite walking area
  • Placing Scoop That Poop signs in common walking areas (or piles of poop, like we do)

We have had pretty good success with our Scoop That Poop signs.  A while back, a neighbor stated "Oh, I wish those landscapers would put those poop signs out again!".  We admitted - to a roar of laughter and high paws - that it was US putting those poop signs out.

As successful as we were - and still are - with our homemade Scoop That Poop signs, we have found an even better way to get people to stop leaving their dog's poop all over the neighborhood.  You may remember this tactic from last month's hop:

Top Tactic to Get Everyone to #ScoopThatPoop
Yep!  Our Top Tactic has become taking their photo (or even PRETENDING to take their photo) with our cell phone camera.  It doesn't matter how far away you are because the goal is not really to capture a great photo of them NOT scooping the poop.  No...the goal is to make them THINK you are getting a great photo of them not scooping the poop.

YEP!  That dog had just pooped on our front lawn!

Once the poop offender sees us with our cell phone camera fixed on them, they turn and hightail it home (hopefully completely embarrassed).  When we see the offenders again, they are miraculously carrying a bag for scooping.

The great news is there is actually LESS poop around the neighborhood now!

Which tactics have you used to get everyone to Scoop That Poop?  Were they successful?  Would you consider using our photo tactic next time?

This month we are featuring The Easy Scoop a Poop, a pet waste scooper-upper, as our Scoop That Poop giveaway.  The Easy Scoop a Poop allows you to pick up dog poop without feeling the texture of it through the bag.  Check out Sugar's Easy Scoop a Poop post for more information.

  2. My Grandpa had a good one. A neighbor had a big dog (Samoyed) who liked to poop on his front lawn and it was never picked up. Grandpa got fed up and one day, he picked up the poop as usual, put it in a bag, went to the neighbor's house (a couple of blocks away), rang the doorbell and presented the lady with the bag of poop. "Your dog left this on my lawn today and I thought you'd be missing it and so I brought it back to its rightful owner".

  7. Oz's hidden camera project! Will we be seeing the footage on a prime time news show any time soon? We just don't have many offenders, so no need for drastic measures where we live. Keep up the good work!

  8. OMD OMD we LOVE that your neighbor thought it was the LANDSCAPERS who left the signs... We used to live in jTOWN.. we had a Sign in our yard that had a dog pooping with the Circle and / through it... That stopped ONE of the neighbors... butt the best was when the OTHER neighbor's dog CONTINUED to poop in OUR YARD... Mom picked it up and Followed them Clear home with it... and then HANDED it to the peeps and said... "I think you FORGOT this in MY yard." THEY never walked on our street again.

  9. Our DIY poop bag station has been a huge success- I'll be tossing a post about it into the hop later today or tomorrow! Sometimes I get tired of always giving my bags away (they aren't free to me!) so I will have to just grab my phone for a photo the next time I am too grouchy to shout "do you need a bag" at the top of my lungs.

  12. Gering-ding-ding-ding-dingeringeding! Oz pal, buddy friend ~ Thanks for helping me reach my goal of sending a kitty on the Scooter Shuttle. Now about this pre·dic·a·ment! My neighbor on the corner has the answer. She keeps tissues and paper towels by her door and when she sees it happening she runs out scoops up the poop and catches up with the offender an hand it to them saying they left something behind. And she always makes sure they get the poop side down in their hand.
    Problem solved.

  13. Hey Oz!
Wow, using the camera to shame them is a super idea! I wish they would all step in a big pile then walk on their own carpet. That'd teach them too! BOL

  15. What a great idea OZ ! I tell you what, mom is still fuming over the condition of the rest area they stopped at last weekend. The awful pet area had at least one poop per square foot probably. Disgusting on all fronts, the peeps for not cleaning up after there own pet and the rest area peeps who don't care if the pet area is clean. YUCK

  20. Oz,
Sounds like you're making a great change, this is a super campaign! I hate everyone (a little) who just leave their poop for someone else to step in because they're too lazy to bend down and pick it up. Your tactics sound really good, and on some forest walks over here, they have poo-bag stations too!
