5 Components of an Effective Pet Evacuation Plan

Did you know that July 15th is National Pet Fire Safety Day?
According to the United States Fire Administration, almost a half million pets are affected by fires each year.

Everyone should be prepared in case of a fire.  One of the most important things you can do is to prepare an evacuation plan for you AND your pet(s) in case of a fire.  If you already have an evacuation plan in case of natural disasters like hurricanes, earthquakes and/or tornadoes you can use that plan for a fire disaster too!

5 key components of any good Pet Evacuation Plan:
  • Choose which family member will be responsible for each pet;
  • Know your pet's hiding spots and look there first during a fire;
  • Be sure your pets have identification on their collars/leashes and/or carriers;
  • Know the best places to exit your home during a fire; and
  • Have a Pet Alert sticker on a window in the front of the house so firefighters know to look for pets.

If you need a Pet Alert sticker, check to see if your local pet store sells them.  If not, you can order them HERE from the ASPCA.

Do you have a Pet Evacuation Plan?
Have you ever had a fire at your house?

    thanks for this post, Oz. I hope this post will help to avoid further victims of house fires. we had a fire once in the living room, fortunately no one was hurt, butt my crib was damaged. therefore I had to stay two weeks longer at the breeder, because they need some time to renovate my crib.

  12. Great info, Oz, thanks for sharing this post today! We've never had a fire, but it's one of the biggest things I worry about when we have to leave the dogs home alone. I check to make sure appliances like toasters are unplugged, and always make sure candles are put out before bedtime. We have an alert sticker in both of the main entrances to our house. Most of the time when we are home, the dogs are right with us or only in the next room. We know where to find the cats most of the time.

    sooooo...a plan is tough when it comes to us cats...Mom L started a kitchen fire several years ago...before me...she had 3 senior cats and as soon as the alarm started screaming...they were no where to be found. So the type of fire can actually make a difference as to whether or not humans can get their indoor cats caught and moved out of harm's way. When Mom L and Dad P had a brush fire cause them to evacuate their home...they could catch the two indoor cats...but the two semi feral outdoor cats...not a chance. Plans work and are important...but with cats...don't count on them being always predictable...just my feline thoughts from experience

  15. This is great Oz, I didn't know about today! We were just talking with my oldest daughter about what she should do if there's a fire and she can't get out of her room. Last night, the power went out because a cord started sparking under our sink. If we hadn't noticed, it surely would have caught fire eventually.
